Looking after your home if the UK weather turns into a freeze…….

The UK does not seem to have escaped the freezing cold yet as the temperatures have dropped below zero again this week.

Freezing temperatures can lead to freezing and bursting of pipes which in turn can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to your property. It is one of the biggest risks to your home in freezing conditions.

Prevention is always the best policy and by taking some simple steps could help prevent an escape of water in your home:

  • See if your boiler has a frost protection thermostat which turns on the heating automatically if the temperature drops to a level that could cause your pipes to freeze

  • Ensure water pipes and tanks/cylinders are adequately lagged/insulated.

  • Make sure you know where your stopcocks are located and that you can easily turn them off if needed as they can become quite stiff

  • Allow warm air to circulate, perhaps consider the loft/attic space too as these are often unheated areas prone to freezing

If you do suffer a burst pipe due to the pipes freezing, there are some simple steps you can take to prevent further damage:

  • Turn off the water and make sure the system is drained to prevent further water escaping

  • Try to locate where the water is leaking from

  • Switch off your electrics, only if safe for you to do so

  • It may be possible to place buckets underneath leaks to catch any escaping water

  • Move valuables away from any dripping water if possible

You should only attempt such measures if it is safe for you to do so

If in doubt, contact us, or your insurer who can advise you on the best course of action and what professional help would be covered by the policy.
